The Beatards Interview: SXSW 2010 - A NYC Hip-Hop band

As reported in spinner.com, New York City Hip-Hop is coming to Texas and the Beatards are bringing it. SXSW concert goers will have their chance to dance to their beats and the experience will likely be described as extreme, wild and with a touch of "What!?" Spinner wants you to know that this is a show to attend. They bring the old school beats with new attitudes, fresh remixes and have created their own unique jams with creative lyrics.

How did you come up with your band name?

DJO: I did it!
UTK: I did it.
Chuck Wild: I did it!
UTK: Yeah, OK, we did it.

How did your band form?

Chuck Wild: Like Vol-...
UTK: Don't say it it! [Long silence.]
Chuck Wild: ...-tron
UTK: That's it d--ksnoz! [Suddenly a lot of noise develops in the background.]
DJO: [Describing the sounds] UTK and Chuck Wild stumbled into the next room fighting like rabid squirrels. And that was UTK screaming "Uncle!"
DJO: I started a party called Mixtape Riot!, brought UTK on to host and UTK's girlfriend's roommate's boyfriend was Chuck. Then UTK introduced me to Chuck and we all started rocking the party together. We got booked for gigs in Norway and Sweden but had no original material. So we wrote five songs on the plane there and The Beatards went from party-rockers to show-stoppers.

What are your musical influences?

UTK: [Singing] Baby, don't forget my number, love will see us through. Armed and dangerous, ain't too many can bang wit us, straight up weed no angel dust. My stupid mouth, has got me in trouble. As she came into the window, was the sound of a crescendo, owwww!
Chuck Wild: I've been DJing my whole life. I have thousands of records from all over the world. I spin a regular salsa y meringue party in Brooklyn four --
DJO: Four years now.
Chuck Wild: Word. Four years. So, I've been filling my mind with music from every corner of the globe. My influences on any given day probably range from Run DMC to the Talking Heads, to my friends and compatriots who play flutes with their noses on the two train. One love, ya'll. One love.
DJO: I'm a punk rock, boom bap banging, skateboard riding, car stealing, ruffian with an affinity for bass. I definitely gotta show all love to Gil Scott-Heron though. Man could do it without a beat. Amazing.

Describe your sound in your own words.

UTK: Alcoholic coconut water.
Chuck Wild: The new "New York."
DJO: Imagine if music were taken from every genre and mixed together by a trio of open-minded mad scientists with nothing to lose but nothing. We make what we want. If you can categorize it you win this month's no-prize.

What's your biggest vice?

Chuck Wild: Records, Red Stripe and rectal exams.
UTK: Curves, comic books and chronic.
DJO: Swedish, Swedish, Swedish.

What's in your festival survival kit?

UTK: The same; curves, comic books and chronic.
Chuck Wild: Same as my vice, records; Red Stripes and a do-it-yourself rectal exam.
DJO: A sleeping bag, a canteen, binoculars, spare change of underwear; two pair total, since inside out equals four. Some Nutella, some french bread because hippie chicks love the good s--t. Some beads, a detailed map of Austin, sandals, boots, high-heels since hippie chicks also like to dress up. A corset, a melon, a sack of potatoes, some horseradish, a willow tree, a book that's been annoyingly dog-eared, some fresh cream, a deck of playing cards with two extra jokers. A handful of ash from Pompeii because hippie chicks love "historicality." And above all things, a Swedish.

Who was your first celeb crush?

UTK: Whitney Houston for talent, Tyra Banks for ziggazow, Selma Hayek for "Wow, I should have never been able to get her but I did!" and Scarlett Johannson cause she's famous.
Chuck Wild: I almost made out with Kate Moss in Puerto Rico when I was 12. She had a crush on me though. Bijou Phillips and I made out, too, when I think I was nine.
DJO: No s--t!?
Chuck Wild: Fo sheez, she got kicked outta camp for kissing a girl.
DJO and UTK: Awesome!
Chuck Wild: What about you, O?
DJO: Easy, Kathy Bates.
UTK: Damn! Forgot about her. Nice one.

What's your musical guilty pleasure?

Chuck Wild: I love me some Dolly Parton.
DJO: Ain't no shame in my game, son.
UTK: Mid 90's R & B. Xcsape, En Vogue, Tevin Campbell, Keith Sweat, Tony Braxton, LSG, Soul for Real, and on and on and on.

Beatles or Stones?

UTK: Monkees
DJO: Cream
Chuck Wild: Velvet Underground.
